The Total Turf 10-Step Process

There are no acceptable shortcuts on someone's home.

Installing artificial turf correctly is landscape construction, not carpet laying. Here is every step our crew performs on your yard, in order, with nothing hidden and nothing skipped.

Several of the steps below are routinely skipped by other installers, or added back later as a surprise charge. At Total Turf, all ten are standard on every job.

Existing sod and soil excavated from a Sacramento yard by the Total Turf crew to create a clean, properly graded base for artificial turf
1

Sod, Soil & Root Removal

We remove the existing sod plus roughly four inches of soil and all roots, giving us proper grading and a genuine clean slate to build on.

This usually means bringing in our Bobcat. Keep in mind: correctly installing artificial turf is landscape construction, and the excavation is what everything else depends on.

2

Sprinklers & Drainage

We cap any existing irrigation, remove the heads, and confirm that drainage is both accessible and sufficient for your turf installation. If drainage needs to be installed, we install it.

3

Landscape Fabric

We install industrial-grade woven landscape fabric across the entire area. It deters weeds and rodents from pushing up through your finished lawn.

4

Perimeter Edging

We install UV-coated or pressure-treated 2x4 edging around the entire perimeter wherever the turf does not butt up against an existing concrete surface such as a pathway, patio, mow strip, or pool deck.

This is what keeps your edges locked down and crisp for the life of the lawn.

Three-quarter inch Type II base rock, the material spread and plate compacted beneath every Total Turf installation
5

Base Rock

We install three to five inches of Type II base rock. We never use crushed demolition concrete as base rock, no matter what it saves.

The base is then plate compacted in multiple passes to guarantee a stable installation and proper drainage underneath.

Decomposed granite, the material installed and compacted over base rock on sloped yards and putting greens
6

Decomposed Granite

On sloped yards and putting greens, we install two inches of decomposed granite over the base.

It is plate compacted so the top of the installation contours correctly with the rest of your landscape design and any existing grading or hardscape.

7

Turf Installation

We install our SGW USA turf using five-inch nails, set every six to eight inches across the entire area.

Every edge is tucked three-quarters of an inch to a full inch over the perimeter line, then pressed in with a carpet spade tool so no seam or border is ever visible.

Where the craftsmanship shows

Pet applications, our S-seam technique, and fully tucked edges are what keep seams invisible for fifteen years or more.

8

Premium Infill

We install beige silica sand, Envirofill, geocool infill to keep your turf locked in place and the blades standing upright rather than matting down.

On putting greens, more infill produces a faster stimp speed, so we dial it in to how you actually want the green to play.

9

Brush & Fluff

A heavy-duty industrial power brush spreads the infill evenly throughout the yard and stands every blade upright, which is what gives a finished lawn that full, natural look.

We also offer this as an annual service to keep your turf looking exactly like it did on day one.
