Why Artificial Turf Costs What It Does — An Honest Breakdown

We hear it at frequently: "I looked it up and turf is only $2 a square foot. Why is my quote so much higher?"

It's a fair question and it deserves an honest answer.

The turf itself is actually the least expensive part of the job. Premium artificial grass runs roughly $1 to $3 per square foot depending on pile height, face weight, and backing quality. On a 500 square foot install that's $500 to $1,500 in material. So where does the rest of the investment go?

The base system is where quality installs are made or broken. Proper preparation requires excavating the existing lawn, grading for drainage, and installing 3 to 4 inches of compacted decomposed granite or base rock — material that costs money and takes skilled labor to install correctly. Skip this step and you get a bumpy, poorly draining surface that underperforms over time.

Then there's infill — the material that goes into the turf fibers to keep them upright, reduce heat, and support the surface. Quality infill isn't cheap and the right application rate matters.

Beyond materials, you're paying for a licensed, bonded, and insured landscape construction company operating legally in California. That means workers compensation coverage for every employee on your property, general liability insurance protecting your home, a valid contractor's license, and a team that's paid fairly and shows up consistently. Running a legitimate operation in Sacramento costs money — and that cost protects you as the homeowner.

When comparing quotes, we encourage you to ask every contractor the same questions: Are your installers employees or subcontractors? Are you licensed and insured in California? What does your base preparation process include? The answers will tell you everything you need to know about what you're actually buying.

A thorough base system, quality materials, and a properly licensed crew aren't upsells — they're the foundation of an installation that performs beautifully for years to come. That's the standard we hold ourselves to on every job, and it's reflected in every proposal we put in front of a customer.
