15 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Sacramento Artificial Turf Installer

Most Sacramento homeowners have never hired a turf installer before. You're not supposed to know what a good question sounds like — but the installer across the table from you is counting on that. Here are the 15 questions I'd want someone to ask me if the roles were reversed.

1. How Many Years Have You Been Installing Turf in Sacramento Specifically?

Not "in the industry." Not "working on projects." Installing turf, here, in this soil, in this climate. A contractor who's done hundreds of installs in El Dorado Hills clay and Natomas sandy loam knows things a generalist never will. Ask for a number and a local example.

2. Are You a Licensed California Contractor?

Artificial turf installation in California requires an active CSLB license. Ask for the number and verify it on the CSLB website before signing. An unlicensed contractor can disappear with your deposit and you have almost no recourse. Total Turf's license is CSLB #1125443 — any legitimate installer will give you theirs without hesitation.

3. Do You Carry Workers' Compensation Insurance?

If a crew member gets injured on your property and the company doesn't carry workers' comp, you can be personally liable. Ask to see the certificate. A real company emails it to you the same day.

4. Is the Crew Working on My Yard Your Employees or Subcontracted?

Many turf "companies" in Sacramento are actually sales offices that subcontract every install to different day-labor crews. The salesman you meet won't be anywhere near your project. Ask who the foreman will be and whether they're a W-2 employee. Consistent crews mean consistent quality.

5. Can I See Three Recent Local Installs?

Photos from manufacturers or pre-built marketing decks don't count. Ask to see three jobs the contractor has completed in Sacramento within the last six months. Drive by one if you can. If the installer dodges this, that's an answer.

6. What Turf Product Are You Proposing, and Can I See the Spec Sheet?

Every legitimate turf product has a manufacturer spec sheet listing face weight, pile height, backing type, UV warranty, and country of origin. If the contractor can't produce it, they're selling you something generic and marking it up. Ask to see the actual spec sheet for the exact product in your quote.

7. How Deep Do You Excavate, and What Base Material Do You Use?

A proper Sacramento install removes 3–4 inches of soil minimum (deeper in heavy clay areas), replaced with compacted road base. Some installers skip this and lay turf on existing soil. It looks fine for one season. Then it shifts. Ask for the specific depth and material — and get it in writing.

8. What's Your Warranty, and What Does It Actually Cover?

There are two warranties that matter: the manufacturer's (on the turf itself) and the installer's (on the workmanship). Standard is 10 years on the product, 1–5 years on workmanship. Read the fine print. A warranty that excludes "normal wear" or "settling" is worthless.

9. How Do You Handle Drainage?

Sacramento winters bring real rainfall and a lot of yards have drainage problems. A proper turf install should improve drainage, not trap water. Ask specifically how they grade for drainage, whether they install a French drain if needed, and what happens to water when it rains hard.

10. What Infill Are You Using, and Why That One?

Standard silica sand works fine for most applications. Antimicrobial coated infill is the right call for pet areas. Ask specifically — if the answer is vague or the installer can't explain the difference, that's a signal they're not thinking carefully about your specific use case.

11. What's the Payment Schedule?

California law caps initial deposits at 10% of the contract or $1,000, whichever is less. Reputable installers break payments into three parts — deposit, start-of-work, and completion. If an installer asks for 50% upfront, walk away.

12. Do You Offer Financing, and What Are the Actual Terms?

Zero-percent APR financing is a real product offered by legitimate lenders. Ask who the lender is and what the fine print says. We offer 0% APR through licensed partners because most homeowners find the monthly payment comparable to what they're currently spending on water and maintenance.

13. How Long Will the Install Take?

A typical 500–1,000 square foot residential install is one to two days. Larger or more complex projects take longer. If an installer is promising a huge project in a single day, they're either skipping steps or they don't know their own timeline.

14. What Happens If Something Goes Wrong After the Install?

Turf can have issues — a seam that separates, an infill settling problem, an edge that pulls up. A good installer comes back and fixes it without making it a fight. Ask specifically: "If I call you six months after install with a problem, what happens?"

15. Can You Give Me a Written, Itemized Quote Today?

A professional installer leaves the estimate visit with your measurements, your product selection, and enough information to produce a written quote. If the installer needs to "check with the office" or "calculate things later," you're dealing with a middleman who's marking up someone else's work. Ask for the quote on the spot.

The Meta-Question

Here's the real signal: watch how the installer reacts to these questions. Good contractors welcome them — they know these questions weed out the competition. Bad ones get defensive, vague, or condescending. The reaction tells you more than the answer.
