If the installer needs to "check with the office" or "calculate things later," you're dealing with a middleman who's marking up someone else's work. Ask for the quote on the spot.
Here's the real signal: watch how the installer reacts to these questions. Good contractors welcome them — they know these questions weed out the competition. Bad ones get defensive, vague, or condescending. The reaction tells you more than the answer.
