How to Prepare Your Yard for Artificial Turf Installation in Sacramento

Getting your yard ready before installation day is one of the most overlooked steps in going artificial. A well-prepped yard means a faster install, better drainage, and a lawn that lasts 15+ years.

Step 1: Remove Existing Lawn and Vegetation

Dead grass, weeds, and existing sod all need to come out — roots and all. Total Turf handles this as part of every installation. We typically remove 3–4 inches of existing material before laying the base.

Step 2: Mark and Cap Irrigation Lines

Artificial turf doesn't need watering, so existing sprinkler systems should be capped or removed. Leaving active irrigation under turf causes drainage issues and can create mold in the base layer.

Step 3: Check for Drainage Issues

Sacramento's clay-heavy soil can drain slowly. Before installation, we grade the sub-base slightly (typically 1–2% slope) to ensure water moves away from your home's foundation.

Step 4: Communicate Any Obstacles

Tree roots, buried utilities, dog runs, or future landscaping plans — tell us in advance. Tree roots in particular can lift turf over time if not addressed before installation.

Step 5: Plan for Infill Type

For pet owners, antimicrobial infill is worth the upgrade. For putting greens, silica sand gives the truest roll. Let us know your priorities and we'll spec the right infill at estimate time.
