Folsom is golf country. With Empire Ranch Golf Club, Granite Bay Golf Club nearby, and dozens of public and private courses within 20 minutes, a lot of Folsom homeowners want to bring their short game home. Backyard putting greens have become one of our most-requested installations in Empire Ranch, Broadstone, and Briggs Ranch.
The Folsom climate (hot dry summers, mild winters) is perfect for outdoor practice greens. Premium putting turf is UV-stabilized and handles 100°F+ summers without fading. Unlike a natural bentgrass green that needs daily mowing, watering, and chemical treatment, an artificial putting green just sits there ready to play year-round.
A putting green isn't just a patch of short turf — it's a precision surface that needs specialized putting turf (nylon fiber, ultra-short pile typically 12-16mm, specific weight for proper ball roll); an engineered base with deeper compaction than standard turf and often multiple base layers; proper contouring with subtle breaks and slopes; cup placement with regulation 4.25-inch cups, typically 4-6 per green depending on size; and fringe/collar turf that frames the green and catches chips.
Empire Ranch backyards often have premium lot sizes that accommodate proper putting greens — typically 400-1,000 square feet of putting surface. We design with multiple cup positions, a chipping fringe, and sometimes a sand bunker for short game practice. Broadstone homes vary more in size, but even compact backyards can fit a 200-300 square foot practice green.
Briggs Ranch and other newer Folsom developments often have clean dirt backyards ready for transformation. Building a putting green into the original landscape design from day one is cheaper than retrofitting later — we coordinate with new home buyers and builders regularly.
If you're not sure how serious you are about practice, multi-use landscape turf with a small dedicated putting zone (100-200 sq ft) is a great compromise. You get a functional yard plus a real practice surface, without committing your whole backyard to golf.
Putting greens require almost no maintenance: power broom the putting surface monthly to keep fibers vertical for true ball roll; top up infill annually (sand-based for true ball speed); rinse with hose occasionally to remove debris; trim surrounding fringe turf as needed. Compared to a real bentgrass green that requires daily attention, this is basically nothing.
Most Folsom HOAs allow putting greens as part of overall landscape design but may require architectural approval. Empire Ranch, Broadstone, and Briggs Ranch all have specific landscape standards. We provide all documentation HOAs typically require and have submitted multiple successful applications in these communities.
