If you ask most turf companies whether weeds can grow through artificial turf, they'll say no. The complete answer: weeds don't grow through a properly installed system — but they can appear in a poorly installed one. Understanding the difference is important before you sign a contract with any installer.
Weeds don't push up from below through properly installed turf. They germinate on top. Airborne seeds land on the turf surface, find organic debris or infill collected in the fibers, and germinate there. This is fundamentally different from weeds growing through the turf from below — which a proper installation prevents entirely. Surface germination is manageable with simple maintenance and occasional spot treatment.
A properly installed Total Turf system prevents below-surface weed growth through three layers of protection:
Complete native soil excavation: We remove all existing vegetation and native soil. Weed seeds in native soil can't germinate if there's no soil left.
Commercial-grade geotextile weed barrier: A heavy-duty permeable membrane installed between sub-base and turf backing blocks any weed growth from below while allowing water to drain freely.
Compacted Class II road base: The dense compacted road base creates a hostile environment for root establishment. Even if something germinates below the weed barrier, it cannot penetrate compacted aggregate.
We add an additional step most installers skip: a pre-installation weed treatment application to native soil before excavation begins. This eliminates viable weed seeds and provides residual control during and after installation. This is one of the specific steps documented in our customer maintenance materials and explains why our clients consistently report better long-term weed control than homeowners whose installations were done elsewhere.
Pull them by hand before they establish root systems, or spot treat with diluted non-toxic herbicide. Regular brushing — a few times per year — disrupts germination before it establishes. Call 916-671-0070 with any weed control questions.
