When Sacramento parents and pet owners ask about the safety of artificial turf, we take the question seriously. There has been real scientific debate over the years. Some concerns have been validated, some debunked, and some remain areas of ongoing research. Here's an honest overview of what we know.
Earlier generations of artificial turf — products from the 1990s and early 2000s — sometimes used lead chromate pigments to maintain green color. This was a legitimate concern for young children. Modern artificial turf from reputable manufacturers no longer contains lead. Every product we install is certified 100% lead-free. We provide material safety data sheets for any product we carry. If a turf company cannot provide lead-free certification, don't install their product.
PFAS have been a topic of growing concern across consumer product categories. Some early-generation turf products used PFAS-containing coatings. We install USA-made products that are certified PFA-free — a specific product selection we've made based on our commitment to family safety. Not every turf company makes this commitment. It's worth asking specifically.
Artificial turf surfaces get warmer than natural grass on hot Sacramento days. Surface temperatures can reach 140–160°F in direct sun. A quick hose rinse brings temperature down within minutes. Shade structures — pergolas, shade sails, or existing trees — moderate surface temperature significantly. Children and dogs acclimate naturally, the same way they don't walk barefoot on hot concrete.
Crumb rubber infill has been the subject of ongoing research regarding potential carcinogen exposure. The scientific consensus remains inconclusive. Out of an abundance of caution, we do not recommend crumb rubber for residential applications where children and pets use the space. We use silica sand, organic infill, and antimicrobial-treated alternatives.
Natural grass produces pollen, harbors insects, and grows mold under Sacramento's winter rain conditions. Artificial turf produces none of these. For children with grass pollen allergies — a significant Sacramento population — artificial turf can genuinely improve backyard quality of life. Call 916-671-0070 with any safety questions.
